The Origin of Humanity and Somali Ancestry

All people come from Prophet Adam. After Adam, the world’s people spread again through the sons of Prophet Noah. Their names were Ham, Shem, and Japheth. Historians say that there were about 2,000 years between Prophet Adam and Prophet Noah. After that, Prophet Noah continued to spread the message of God. But historians do not tell us exactly how many years were between Prophet Noah and Prophet Abraham.

The descendants of Ham, the son of Noah, lived in the northern part of Asia. Many years later, when the human population grew, people began to move and migrate to find new lands to live in. About 10,000 years ago, some of the Hamites left the Caucasus Mountains, which are between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

  • The first group of these people settled in North Africa, especially in Egypt. Even today, their descendants live in the area of Port Said.

  • The second group moved further and settled in Ethiopia.

  • Later, they spread across the Horn of Africa and East Africa, where they still live today.

Researchers who study history, languages, and the bones of ancient peoples say that even though all humans come from the family of Prophet Noah, they are divided into three main races:

  1. Caucasian

  2. Mongoloid

  3. Negroid (Bantu)

The Somalis share both ancestry and culture with the Eastern Cushitic peoples. The Hamitic peoples who live in the Horn of Africa are divided into two main groups:

  1. Those who live in the highlands (mountains) – such as the Habesha and most of the Sidamo, who mostly follow Christianity.

  2. Those who live in the lowlands (plains) – such as the Somalis, Afar, and Oromo, who mostly follow Islam.

In total, the Eastern Hamitic peoples are made up of eight main groups: Somali, Saho, Oromo, Afar, Habesha, and Maasai, among others.

The Somalis, Oromos, and Afars are close neighbors and are described as people who are very similar in culture, physical appearance, and language roots, even though their spoken languages are different.

Historical records tell us that more than 3,500 years ago, the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut visited the Land of Punt (what the Egyptians called part of Somalia, known as the Land of Incense). Because of this, historians confirm that the Somali people are of Hamitic origin. They also had strong ancient connections with the Egyptians. The Somalis settled in the land we now call Somalia about 4,000 years before the birth of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him).
