The Story of the Foolish Donkey with fox

the foolish donkey

Does a Donkey Have a Mind?

A long time ago, there was a lion who was the king of all the wild animals. But the lion became old and weak. He could not hunt or catch anything anymore.

One early morning, while the lion was sitting in the forest, a fox came. She greeted him and said,
“Oh lion, you are not sick because of age. You are just unwell. Do you want me to tell you the medicine for your sickness?”

“Yes,” said the lion.

The fox replied, “Your medicine is the brain of a donkey.”

The lion said, “Then go and bring me one.”

The fox ran quickly and found a donkey eating grass near a village. She went to him and said,
“Oh donkey, you are very lucky! Our forest king, the lion, has become old, and he has ordered me to bring you. He wants to make you the new king. Come quickly with me.”

The donkey believed her and followed her. Together they went to the place where the lion was.

When the donkey came close, the lion suddenly jumped on him and bit off his two long ears. The donkey, bleeding, ran away back to the fox and said,
“Why did you trick me? Look what the lion did to me!”

The fox laughed and answered,
“Oh donkey, don’t be silly. Your ears are nothing. A king doesn’t need big ears. The lion only wanted to test the size of your head, to see if the crown of the forest would fit you. Come back with me. He really wants to make you king.”

The donkey believed her again and returned with the fox.

This time, when he came close, the lion held the donkey by the head, broke his neck, and killed him. The lion then put the head aside and started eating the donkey’s body.

While he was busy eating, the fox quietly went behind him, opened the donkey’s head, and ate the brain.

After eating enough meat, the lion remembered the medicine. He said to himself,
“Now I am full. Let me eat the donkey’s brain, the medicine for my sickness.”

But when he looked, the brain was gone. So he asked the fox,
“Where is the donkey’s brain?”

The fox replied, laughing,
“Oh lion, a donkey has no brain. If he had a brain, he would never have come back to you after escaping the first time!”

moral

Do not be foolish and trust lies too easily.
If you escape from danger once, do not go back again.
Wisdom and careful thinking protect life, but foolishness brings harm.

The End
